Dare I say, a TV series enveloped with a few faux pas yet passing hip cool styles into the future. Department S is this and more for a range of audiences. This tv show being one of the main ingredients to my admiration for the craft and humour of Classic Spy/Detective/Quirk mystery show. It relied on some very stereotypical characters known all over the mystery world but there was a flair and smarts to this show that had no other before and rarely after had. Department S is an obscure cult television show thatĀ transcends the genre with lasting memories of the jet set playboys and girls that flew on high flying planes to highly exotic locations. But with some sinister edges.
Realistically speaking of course,Ā Department S is a spy-fi adventure television series produced by ITC Entertainment. The series consists of 28 episodes which originally aired in 1969-70. It starred the flamboyentĀ Peter Wyngarde as author Jason King (later featured in spin-off series Jason King), the upright American intelligence officerĀ Joel Fabiani as Stewart Sullivan, and Rosemary Nicols as computer expert Annabelle Hurst. This collection were agents for a fictional special department (the ‘S’ of the title) of Interpol. The head of Department S was Sir Curtis Seretse (Dennis Alaba Peters), a groundbreaking decision for the casting as a black man would not have received this role especially with the racial strife in the UK at the time.
